  A

Some years ago I took on a task in a southern county to work with people on public welfare. What I wanted to do was to show that everybody has the capacity to be self sufficient and all we have to do is to activate(激励)them. I asked the country to pick up a group of people who were on public welfare, people from different racial groups and different family groups. I would then see them as a group for three hours every Friday. I also asked for a little petty cash to work with, as I needed it.

The first thing I said after I shook hands with everybody was, “I’d like to know what your dreams are.” Everyone looked at me as if I were kind of fool.

One woman said to me, “I don’t know what you can do with dreams. The rats are eating up my kids.”

“Oh,” I said, “That’s terrible. No, of cours e, you are very much involved with the rats and your kids. How can that be helped?”

“Well, I could use a new screen door because there are holes in my screen door.” I asked, “Is there anybody around here who know how to fix a screen door?”

There was a man in the group and he said, “A long time ago I used to do things like that but now I have a terribly bad back, but I’ll try.”

I told him I had some money if he would go to the store and but some screening and go and fix the lady’s screen door. “Do you think you can do that?”

  “Yes, I’ll try.”

The next week, when the group was seated. I said to the woman, “Well, is your screen door fixed?”

  “Oh, yes.” she said.

“Then we can start dreaming, can’t we?” she sort of smiled at me.

I said to the man who did the work, “How do you feel?”

He said, “Well, you know, it’s very funny thing. I’m beginning to feel a lot better.”

That helped the group to begin to dream. These seemingly small successes allowed the group to see that dreams were not insane. These small steps began to get people to see and feel that something really could happen.

Everyone found something. The man who put in the screen door became a handyman. In 12 weeks, I had all those people off public welfare. I’ve not only done that once, I’ve done that in many times.

56.What’s the opinion the author had when he took on the work?

Well, more and more companies are beginning to create

products and services for tweenagers. The Disney company

sells the Hannah Montans television show, music, film and

merchandise to tweenagers and their parents. You can get

everything from branded lunchboxes and mobile phone covers, to monthly fan magazines and clothing. The High School Musical series of films is also intended for a tweenage audience. So, it’s all about sales, which tells us twccnagers must have more money, freedom and influence upon their parcnts than they’ve ever had before.

UK tweenagers never used to be worried about spending money on clothes and fashion accessories. That’s changed. Now, they are much more fashion conscious and concerned about their image. In a world of television programmes that promise overnight success and fame at a young age (for example, the shows Britain’s Got Talent and American Idol), some people think it’s extremely important to look fashionable.

So what does tweenage fashion look like? Well, it’s quite horrible really, but then I’m a bit too old to appreciate it, I suppose. It’s lots of brightly coloured materials, pa rticularly pink, and usually plain, not patterned. There are plenty of bows, necklaces and bracelets, too. It’s all very cute, if that’s your taste.

Surely none of the above is a good thing, is it? Can it really be healthy for us to encourage kids to be like adults at such a young age? Are we stealing childhoods in return for a bit of profit? Well, the UK government is certainly concerned, and for that reason has strict laws preventing companies from explicitly marketing their products and services at children.

Even the rest of UK society is concerned. Now that people are aware of the problem, there is a

popular backlash against the exploitation of children by commercial marketing.

60.The passage is mainly about .

A.British tweenagers who are coneemed about fashions

B.UK companies targeting products at children

C.a social problem conceming tweenagers in the UK

D.products that attract young people in England

61.From the passage, we can see that tweenagers are most probably .

  A.children aged between 10 and 12

B.young people who are their twenties

C.adults who are studying in high schools

D.teenagers who are richer and look fashionable

62.It can be inferred from the passage that the tweenagers nowadays .

A.are content with their life and are carefree

B.often get their parents to buy things for them

C.never worry about spendin g money on their clothes

D.are losing their childhood to get a bit of profit

63.The author of the passage .

A.is obviously in favor of tweenage fahsion

B.is fond of brightly colored materials that are to his taste

C.opposes marketing products and services at children

D.thinks it impossible to make profits by selling things to kids
